Introduction
With support for the Matter protocol, Amazon Alexa lets you integrate smart devices like the SONOFF M5 Matter smart wall switch directly into your Alexa smart home ecosystem. Matter ensures local connectivity, improved responsiveness, and multi-platform compatibility—no proprietary apps required.
In this guide, we'll show you how to set up a SONOFF M5 Matter smart wall switch with the Alexa app, giving you voice control via Echo devices, access to automation routines, and reliable performance over Wi-Fi.

Preparation
Before getting started, ensure the following:
- Matter-certified device with a QR code or setup code (e.g., SONOFF M5 Matter)
- A stable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network
- The Amazon Alexa app installed (Android 8.1+ or iOS 16.5+)
- A Matter-compatible Alexa controller such as: Echo 4th Gen, Echo Dot 5th Gen, Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen or later) ( Check the Matter-compatible Alexa controller list here)
The Alexa controller should be connected to the same Wi-Fi as your phone.
Note: Your Echo device must support Matter over Wi-Fi and have firmware updated to the latest version.
Setup Guide
Step 1: Add A Matter-compatible Alexa Controller
- Open Alexa App, tap "+" icon → "Device" → "Amazon Echo" (Here we use Amazon Echo as the Matter controller to add Matter devices.)
- Power on Echo and let it enter the pairing mode. Wait for the Alexa to discover it and then tap the Echo to finish its setup. Connect it to a 2.4G WiFi network. After your Echo is ready, you can find it on your device page and add Matter devices now.
Step 2: Add Matter Device in the Alexa App
- Install and wire the M5 Matter switch as instructed in the user manual
- Power it on — the LED should blink quickly, indicating it's in pairing mode. If it's not blinking, press and hold the switch button for 5–10 seconds to reset and enter pairing mode
- Tap "Devices" → "+" → "Add Device"
- Choose "Other" →"Matter" from the list of device types
- Tap "Yes" when asked if your Matter device has a QR code
- Scan the QR code on the device or product Quick Guide
- Tap "Connect" to pair the device
Alexa will automatically search for and connect to the SONOFF M5 Matter:
- Assign a device name and room location
- Confirm and finish setup
โStep 3: Test Control via Alexa
In the Alexa app, your M5 Matter switch will appear as a controllable device. You can
- Tap to toggle it on/off
- Use voice commands like:
"Alexa, turn on the hallway light" - Add it to Alexa routines, e.g., "When I say ‘Goodnight', then turn off all lights."
