Preparation
Before beginning, please ensure the following:
- Matter-certified device with a QR code or setup code (e.g., SONOFF M5 Matter)
- A smartphone with the SmartThings app installed (iOS 16.5+ or Android 8.1+)
- A 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network (shared between phone and Matter device)
- A Matter Controller connected to SmartThings, such as: SmartThings Station, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, SmartThings Hub V3, Samsung Galaxy phone (One UI 5.0+) with Matter Controller support, etc. (Check SmartThings x Matter Integration here)
Make sure SmartThings and your phone OS are fully updated to support Matter onboarding.
Setup Guide
Step 1: Add A Matter Controller to SmartThings
Here we use the Aeotec Smart Home Hub as the Matter controller.
- Power on the Aeotec Smart Home Hub
- Tap "Add device", then select "Aeoec", scan the hub QR code and then follow the on-screen instructions.
- After the Aeotec Smart Home Hub connected successfully, you can find it on the App home page.
Step 2: Add the Device in SmartThings App
- Wire and power on SONOFF M5 Matter (The device enters the pairing mode by default when powered on for the first time, and the LED indicator flashes two short and one long.)
- If not, press and hold the physical button for 5–10 seconds until the LED blinks.
- SmartThings will automatically discover the device, then tap "Add"
- Scan the Matter QR code on M5 Matter or its product Quick Guide
- Follow the on-screen steps to:
- Connect the device to your Wi-Fi
- Wait for the device to connect with the app
Once connected, you can rename the device and set the icon for it, and the device appears in your SmartThings dashboard for control and automation.

Troubleshooting
Device not found during setup?
- Make sure M5 Matter is in pairing mode (LED blinking rapidly)
- Ensure you scanned the correct Matter QR code
- Check that your Matter controller is available and active
SmartThings can't scan the QR code?
- Use the QR code printed on the product Quick Guide or use the numeric setup code (you can find it in the eWeLink App - Device Settings).
- Clean the camera lens and ensure good lighting
Already paired with another platform?
- Matter devices can only be paired with one controller at a time
- Reset the device by holding the button for 10+ seconds before retrying
Automation not triggering?
- Confirm Wi-Fi stability and that SmartThings routines are configured properly
- Check the app permissions and SmartThings location settings

A: Yes. Once paired, control is local via Wi-Fi, although cloud services require internet for remote access.
